Proudly Scottish ceramics artist/maker born in Falkirk, Scotland now living in beautiful Washington state, USA; wife, daughter, sister; bee helper (as “keeping” wild things is largely impossible); protector and best friend to Pearl, my rescue dog, & two spoiled cats; lover of nature & wilderness; organic gardener & chicken raiser; animal rescuer; fierce advocate for kindness & living with intention; believer in the magic of storytelling & Scottish folklore; impossible dreamer & relentless fighter in the face of challenge & adversity; compassionate spirit, humbly seeking to spark a little light, hope, joy, & inspiration wherever I can

About the Bothy
"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? ~ Mary Oliver, Poet

After years as a dedicated healthcare professional, before transitioning to the corporate world where my creativity increasingly felt stifled, and a sense of meaning and purpose became elusive...I found myself at a crossroads. A family member's cancer relapse provided a jarring reminder that we each have only one "wild and precious life", and a (re)realization of the paramount importance of family, friendships, and pursuing what truly matters. Years of neglecting my creative passions had flown by, and I realized I needed to reclaim that part of myself. With renewed clarity and some courage, I returned to ceramics, a craft that had once brought me so much joy.
The Crafty Wee Bothy represents my journey back to purpose and passion, a homage to my Scottish roots and testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Through each handcrafted piece, I hope to infuse everyday objects with beauty and meaning, and to inspire others to embrace their own creative pursuits, no matter where life has taken them. As long as we wake up each morning, it's not too late to make a change and take a step towards a more fulfilling life...and I believe that we all deserve to live authentically and joyfully for whatever precious amount of time we are given.

The Making Process
Hand-crafting unique and artistic pottery is a rewarding, enjoyable process that can take days, and sometimes weeks to complete...from coming up with a design idea to completing the finishing touches.
Selecting the right clay is critical as this greatly impacts the pottery's appearance and functionality. The clay is sourced locally, and each piece is built, stamped, and/or carved by hand from hand-rolled clay slabs.
Once constructed, each piece is dried for 1-2 days until it is leather hard and is then further smoothed and shaped in preparation for initial firing. It typically takes several more days for the clay to dry completely before it can be fired. At this stage, it is highly fragile and must be handled carefully. Loading the kiln involves fitting all the pieces on the shelves as efficiently as possible, and then firing at high temperature for approximately 16 hours. Once cool, the kiln is unloaded and the pieces are ready for glazing.
Several coats of glaze (and underglaze, if used) are brushed on by hand, and then the pieces are then carefully loaded into the kiln and fired once again for approximately 8 hours.
For certain pieces, I may complete several additional steps, such as using a buffing compound to add metallic highlights and/or adding a copper or leather hanger, if appropriate.
Handcrafting pottery is not a quick or easy process (the best things in life rarely are) but seeing the end results definitely makes it worthwhile. My hope is that my customers can tell just how much care, thought and effort went into each piece!
